How the Past Became Present
Write a paper that explains how the past comes into the present when we are “doing race”.
Choose one of the examples from the passage above that Markus and Moya mentioned or choose another aspect of individual and collective behavior .
Explain the mechanisms that have worked overtime to reproduce racial and ethnic inequality. Example could be like “going to work or school.” or “buying a house.”
In the paper (1) explain how race and ethnic inequality affects the ability of people from different racial groups to do that and what the consequences are as they do so.
Be specific about what kinds of things people do, what resources they have available, and how the structure of intergroup relations and institutional processes, as well as everyday interactions, lead to an outcome where this every day and routine activity shapes how people do race and ethnicity.
(2) From own analysis, discuss what would need to be done to “do difference differently, i.e. what policy changes or anti-racist behaviors might create greater equality in this particular domain of what we do.
