Name two reasons as to why the U. S. failed to contain COVID-19?
One reason why the U. S. failed to contain COVID-19 was because there was a lot of miscommunication about the disease. There were reports on the news saying that the disease was not that serious and yet people were dying all around the world at an alarming rate. The president and government officials were not upfront about the disease, and they just did not have information to give people in the beginning. Once the CDC and the government knew more about the disease and told people they needed to wear mask, social distance by staying six feet apart, and to stay at home, people did not take that serious. Political parties were still holding rallies for campaigns, and there were so many people that just did not obey the mandates which did not help contain the disease. Even after many cities, and countries shut down people still did not take this virus seriously. The president himself acted as if this was a simple virus and continued to downplay the disease.
Based on the lesson learned thus far, what can the U. S. do in the future when faced with a pandemic or national emergency related to infectious diseases?
The U. S. first needs to have a meeting to come up with the correct information about the disease/ virus that posses a threat. There needs to be meeting with the CDC, the capital and other agencies on what, how and why a virus/disease is happening and come up with a strategy on how to contain it and to decease the rate of mortality. Once there has been some understanding about what is going on, there needs to be one group or person to relay that information to the news media for the public. be upfront with the pubic and have everyone on board with the guidelines and mandates that will be set. Another issue that did not help contain COVID-19 was hospitals not having enough PPE. With that said, there needs to be a budget in place specifically for PPE and medical equipment. Having the necessary equipment for hospital personnel and essential workers, will help contain the spread of a virus and keep people, staff and patients safe.
