Systems leadership is becoming a global approach to public health issues “where emphasis is placed on the relationships between the parts that forma a physical system in addition to understanding the individual parts and their environment separately” (Bigland, et.al., 2020, p. 2).

It is important to examine and work to improve all facets of a situation/issue to establish a continuous system of quality improvement. In order to move forward to continuously elevate work and improve quality, all parts of the system must work together and it’s important to have strong leadership that “shifts attention to leadership beyond organizational boundaries and across the wider network of groups, organizations, communities and stakeholders involved in creating and sustaining whole systems change” (Bolden, et.al., 2019, p. 28).

Given that systems leadership relies on multiple puzzle pieces working together for a common goal, it’s important that a leader have the ability to nurture and maintain advantageous relationships.

The “findings demonstrate that relationships are essential and that while they can be built in a number of ways, consciously focusing on nurturing them is important” (Bigland, et.al., 2020, p. 12). Because healthcare encompasses so many moving parts, it’s important that nurses maintain positive connections with every aspect of patient care, everything from IT to housekeeping to administration, to fellow clinicians. When everyone is focused and motivated, quality can be improved as a common goal is reached.

It is also important to “recognize that ensuring diversity and inclusion is essential, as different aspects of systems working will require different forms of knowledge, expertise, experience and personal characteristics” (Bigland, et.al., 2020, p. 12).

Having a nurse leader that is inclusive, open-minded, and values the importance of relationships across the spectrum will increase the productivity of the team as a whole.
