Writing Your Own Critique
Introduce the work that you are critiquing. Give the title, author, and a brief summary of what it’s is about. It helps to have an opening that pulls your reader in so they don’t get bored. Do this with your thesis statement. The more interesting your introduction is, the more likely your audience will read further.
Present the substance of your arguments in the next three paragraphs. To develop your points, keep in mind certain analytical questions about the work. For example, was the author successful at making his or her point?
If it is easier, divide the work into sections and focus on individual sections for each point. Strengthen each point by citing examples from the piece you are critiquing. Try to keep to one point per paragraph. If your analysis includes more than three points, write more than three paragraphs.
Write a conclusion. Tie it all together with a summation of your critique. You can do this by stating your overall opinion about the work.
