When it rains, water can move from where it fell to another place. This water is called stormwater. Stormwater can be used in several ways, such as irrigation, formation of water features, and domestic purposes like washing. However, stormwater can be a menace in urban centers if it is not managed well.
It may lead to flooding, pollution of water sources, destruction of property, contamination of water, increased cost of water treatment, and even death. This paper will summarize how the East Tampa community has developed meaningful projects by using stormwater.
Various initiatives have improved water quality at East Tampa, to the North of McKay Bay, using stormwater as the teaching tool. This is because stormwater from the community contributes to a large percentage of the pollutants such as nitrogen and phosphorus in the bay (“USF Project helps,” 2017.
The Tampa Bay Estuary Program and the National Fish and wildlife foundation have funded a project that aims at reducing pollutants load from stormwater in the urban areas by developing a bio-retention system that will eliminate both nitrogen and phosphorus pollutants as compared to the other methods that only eliminated phosphorus (“USF Project Helps,” 2017). The system can also work effectively by adding mulch to improve Nitrogen removal to a higher percentage.
Creating a rain garden in the school has increased the students’ knowledge of the quality of water and improved the school’s aesthetic view. In addition, the garden can be created in areas where flooding occurred (“USF Project Helps,” 2017).
The involvement of students in this process is important as they are the future generation. The skills they will gain are crucial for making decisions and improving the community. The skills can also be used to create jobs
