This is a college application essay to the prompt;
My daughter Emma was born with a cleft and partial palate. She has had 8 surgeries since she was 4 mths old the latest being in June of this summer 2021.
Kids when young can be cruel and have said stuff like “whats wrong with your mouth and nose” “your lip/nose are crooked” even brown adults say thing to the kids like “she was born with a birth defect” right in front of her.
She had struggled over the years with self esteem but in the past 2 years in HS has realized that she is beautiful inside and out and her cleft don’t define who she is!
She had years of physical therapy, speech therapy and Occupation therapy. She wants to before a nurse and go Alecia into surgical nursing with children born with Craigavon deformities like her. She remembers being frightened before the surgeries and the nurses carrying for her and helping her feel beautiful and strong.
She also has a brain hermitage at 15 days old and died 2x and was brought back to life. Her stroke did create some learning disability in math functions so she is terrible in math but She works very hard at school and does well taking honors and college level classes when she can and had a high gpa. She now realizes that God kept her here for a reason and she has a calling to be a nurse to help children like her.
Don’t want essay to be a “pitty” “feel sorry for me” essay. Want it to be about perseverance, self awareness, self love and determination and a fighter to take hard situations. Someone that has fought through struggles her whole life and come out stronger for it. Someone who will be an asset to any college and will work her ass off to become a nurse.
