Overview: for this assignment, you will need to summarize a peer-reviewed, primary source article (an article that describes an original experiment) on a topic of interest to you, that is related to evolutionary/biological anthropology.
But what is “a peer-reviewed, primary source article”?
primary source: an article from a scientific journal that describes an original experiment.
These papers will have materials and methods (or simply “methods”) sections that describe how the author(s) conducted their experiment/study. These are reviewed by peers (experts on the topic) before they are published. These types of papers almost always follow the format pictured above (title, abstract, introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, conclusion).
Examples of articles that are not peer-reviewed and/or primary source:
secondary source: These are written for the general public, and summarize results from primary sources. These do not have materials and methods sections because they are not describing the original experiment in great detail, rather only the results. These are not peer-reviewed.
Review papers: these are peer-reviewed papers that summarize primary sources on a particular topic. They are aimed at experts rather than the general public.

How to find a primary source research article from a peer-reviewed journal:Step 1: Go to the U of A Main University Library Website: 2: Search for an article using a keyword.
Option 1: In the “summon” tab, type a topic of interest into the search bar. Once the search loads, find in column to the left where it says “Refine your Search” and choose “Scholarly (Peer Reviewed)”.
Option 2: In the “databases” tab, find the list of “Featured databases” and use one of those databases (Google Scholar, Web of Science are great) to search for articles.Make your life easier: connect google scholar to your UA library account:Instructions:
1. In Google Scholar, open the “hamburger” menu in the far upper left next to the Google Scholar logo and select “Settings.
2. From the settings menu, select “Library links”.
3. Type “University of Arizona” in box and select “University of Arizona – Full-Text @ UofA Libraries”. Then click Save
.4. When searching, articles for which we have full text access will display with a link “Full-Text @ UofA Libraries”; select this link to access it. (Please note that this link may be hidden in the smaller links below the citation, and you may need to click on the double arrow to the right of them to find it.)To get a full reference for your paper click on the “ (quotation mark) under the google scholar link for your paper.
Choose APA format. Step 3: Read through the abstract/summary of different articles to find one that interests you.Step 4: Check to see if your article is a primary research article: i.e. the authors did some original research. If so, the paper will have a materials and methods section
