Assignment Description:
●Watch the video A Time for Justice in the “Civil Rights and Civil Liberties” folder, while taking notes on the facts and impressions that you get while viewing the video.
●Once you complete your information gathering experience, create a two-page paper that answers the following reflective prompts about the experience.
○ Segregation, a social system based on a long history of prejudices and discrimination, was deeply entrenched in people’s minds as well as in the culture.
How did segregation manifest itself in daily life in the South? How did segregation disenfranchise African-Americans?
○Why do you think the lynching of Emmett Till became a catalyst in the national
movement for civil rights?
○What means were available to disenfranchised blacks in America to fight segregation?
○How did people summon the courage to confront the intimidation, brutality, and
injustice they faced under the Jim Crow system?
●Add photos to your essay from the Internet related to the civil rights struggle to punctuate your essay. Be thoughtful about constructing this essay based on the placement of the photos.
●Compare the information you gathered in this experience to the material you are learning in American Government class. Select specific course concepts that align with what you have learned in this film review and share them in your essay. Defend your selections by explaining why they align.
●Provide an argument as to why these kinds of student experiences are important to enhance civic education.
●Identify the specific career skills necessary to complete this assignment and provide an analysis as to how those skills might be useful in your academic pathway and civic life.
The paper should be two-pages with one inch margins and 12 point font. Address all four prompts thoroughly in your essay. The photos should enhance the essay but not replace the text. The essay should be 1000-1200 words in length. Proofread for spelling, grammar, punctuation and capitalization errors. This essay will be housed in Portfolium as a demonstration of student abilities and can be used as supporting documentation with future employers.
