INTRODUCTION
The American Correctional Association is a private, non-governmental, non-profit trade association and accrediting body for the corrections industry, it is the world’s largest and oldest such association. It was founded in 1870. There are 3 models of corrections. They are custodial, rehabilitation and reintegration. A model of correctional institutions that emphasizes the provisions of treatment programs designed to reform the offender. In this paper we will be discussing topics in Corrections like the establishment of corrections, the statistics of corrections, pros and cons and the Corrections industry.
Establishment of Corrections
Corrections has always been a tough and challenging, yet extremely rewarding occupation. From the extensive training and qualifications to the high recidivism rate of repeat offenders.
Correctional officers must obtain order and daily operations of the facility and are responsible for the care, custody and control of the inmates. Being a correctional officer comes with many responsibilities.
Training in North American prisons include a variety of areas including
• Self Defense
• First Aid and CPR
• Criminal Law
• Corrections Law
• Gang Intelligence
• Hostage Negotiation
• And Report Writing
The early prisons of the 16th and 17th centuries were used more like jails where criminals were held for a short period of time. This means children were held with adults, murderers with debtors and people with lesser offenses.
The Facilities were not manned properly or cared for in reference to maintenance issues. Many offenders died from disease while awaiting punishments for their crimes. The Federal Prison were established in 1891.
Today Corrections is described as a variety of programs services, facilities, and organizational responsible for the management of people who have been accused or convicted of criminal offenses.
Statistics Within Corrections: Budgets, State, Federal and Local
States estimated spending just over $45 billion on corrections in FY2019, an increase from the $43.5 billion totaled up in FY2018.
Local cities and counties are normally responsible for the funding of most local law enforcement jail operations.
