Jerome David Salinger (1919-2010), published The Catcher in The Rye in 1951. Salinger used slang and swear words in his text and discusses adolescent sexuality in a complex and open way, many readers were offended, and the book provoked a great deal of controversy.
Some critics argued that the work was not serious literature, citing its casual and informal tone as evidence. Although controversial, the novel appealed to a large number of readers.
It was a popular best seller and a critical success. Salinger’s writing seemed to touch readers’ emotions in an unprecedented way.
