The Effects of Alternative and Complementary Medicine On Cancer

As a child I can remember my mother struggling with sickness caused by chemotherapy, a conventional method of medicine used in the treatment of cancer. My mother’s friend came from Canada to visit and inform her of a special tea that apparently cured her cancer.

Intrigued by the idea that she could cure this disease without the harrowing effects such as hair loss and nausea caused by chemotherapy, my mother asked her doctor about alternative treatments. Unfortunately, whatever ingredients that were in this herbal concoction weren’t recognized as beneficial for mainstream practice in the United States.

In 1996, my mother beat cancer without this “miracle” drink but continued to wonder about these unconventional treatments used in other countries. My mother now uses a number of herbs and spices recommended by naturopathic doctor in Ireland to keep her blood pressure low and help maintain her overall health.
