Discuss the Relationship between Race and Health.
Race refers to a group of humankind sharing specific distinctive physical traits like culture (Williams & Sternthal, 2010).
Based on the World Health Organization, health refers to an entire state of the mental, social, and physical wellbeing of a person, not just the deficiency of susceptibility or illnesses.
According to the US Government’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB), five racial groups exist. These groups entail African American, Whites, American Indian, Asian and Native Hawaiian, and Hispanic, an ethnic group (Chase et al., 2020).
The groups’ differences reflect health disparity issues in the US government and many parts of the world. Notably, based on the latest studies discoveries, the race is more of a social than a biological category in health.
This paper aims to look into the association between race and health, how race affects health as social status, and policies addressing social determinants of health and their interventions to the health of racial minorities in the US.
