The Athenian Campaign in Sicily

The Peloponnesian War had forced Athens to be unwillingly involved in the affairs of Sicily. Athens and Sicily were enemies although they had never been involved in a bloody conflict.

The long battle between Athens and its allies versus Syracuse was perceived to be the onset of other major conflicts in the region given the deep involvement of Athens in supporting Sicily enemies.
