Select a data-based research article (not an information or review article) published within the last year that deals with the assigned topic of study.
When in doubt, check with the instructor about the appropriateness of the article’s content.
Journals with possibly pertinent articles are Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, Journal of Physical Fitness and Sports Medicine, International Journal of Sports Medicine, Journal of Sport and Conditioning Research, Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport,
British Journal of Sports Medicine, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, American Journal of Human Biology, New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Applied Physiology, Journal of the American Medical Association, and International Journal of Obesity.
If possible, use the Internet to view the tables of contents of recently published journals or to conduct a search of recently published articles on the topic.
Written review (double spaced) should not exceed two pages. Use a word processor, Times New Roman font, and font size 12.
When you choose to use the exact words of the authors in your written reviews (direct quotation), make certain you do so properly: Cite the author’s name, year of publication, and page number of the source from which the quote was taken.
Parts of Review
Citation: Write a complete citation for the article, including all authors, title, journal title, volume number, inclusive pages, and year.
Purpose: Briefly state the purpose of the research.
Methods: Briefly indicate subject demographics, research design, test protocols, statistical analysis, and so forth.
Results: Highlight the major results and findings of the study.
Conclusion: What did the authors conclude based on the results?
Implications: In your own words, what does it all mean?
How can the exercise scientist use or apply this information in practical settings? What is the take-home message for your audience?
