View the two paintings below. Write a 350 – 400 word essay about ONE of them.
In your narrative about this painting, you are to discuss:
1) The elements of art and image content observed;
2) The principles of art that are employed;
3) Your own interpretation of the painting as a whole;
4) How well this work meets the basic criteria for ONE of three broad aesthetic categories: Imitationalism, Formalism, or Emotionalism?
(You can research these topics on your own, but we will discuss them in-class as well)
Although this is primarily YOUR response to the painting, cite any external sources you used
while writing the essay. Titles of the paintings and their artists are deliberately not given here.
Essays are be submitted through Blackboard in MS Word-compatible format. In Blackboard,
click the Assignments and Projects tab, then the Writing Assignments folder. PDF, RTF and
plaintext formats are also acceptable. Late work will be penalized.
