To better understand our own biases, complete the Implicit Association Test (IAT) found within this week’s resources. These tests use images to gauge information about biases that people may not consciously recognize.
According to Project Implicit, the IAT measures the strength of associations between concepts (e.g., black people, gay people) and evaluations (e.g., good, bad) or stereotypes (e.g., athletic, clumsy).
After completing self-assessments in this week’s resources, reflect on the role of implicit biases in the consideration of diversity within your social work practice. Prepare a written analysis of the following:
Indicate whether you were surprised by the results of your IAT. THE RESULTS WERE THAT I PREFERED BLACK OVER WHITE WHICH I FOUND HURTFUL DUE TO GROWING UP BEING THE ONLY PERSON OF COLOR IN MY CATHOLIC SCHOOL FOR A YEAR IN NY. I WAS FAIR TO ANDROGENOUS PEOPLE.
Analyze the dimensions of oppression and marginalization that might influence your future clients and their communities. Be specific in identifying the types of clients and the communities with whom you might work.
Explain how the concepts of cultural competence and cultural humility are relevant to social work practice. Provide examples to illustrate your thoughts.
Support your assignment with at least three scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including seminal articles, may be included.
