The Task
Write a 4000-5000 word (maximum) critical discussion paper on the following: Drawing on either the Children and Families or Adults practice area teaching (making links across the teaching where possible), critically explore current service provision in one of the practice areas and outline how services could be improved to ensure a whole family approach.
You can choose to focus on any one of the following:: •Austerity and the current economic climate/innovation and creation•Utilising family and community resources•Early intervention and prevention•Multi-agency working•Enhanced role of carers•Assessment including risk assessment
Structure- the discussion paper must be written in the third person and contain:
1. an introduction clearly identifying the practice area and focus topic (from the list above) you intend to discuss, how this will relate to the module case study and demonstrating your understanding of what is meant by whole family approaches.
2. a main body outlining your practice area and focus topic, using the module case study to critique the strengths and limitations of current legislation, policy, service provision and organisational structures in delivering whole family approaches within this topic.
As part of this critique, you must consider how limitations in current legislation, policy, service provision and organisational structures impact the expectations of you, your role and performance as a professional, and any ethical dilemmas this may cause.
3. a conclusion which makes recommendations for policy, practice and further research.
In preparing the paper you could potentially draw upon the following sources:• Social work and other related academic texts e.g. journal articles, books• Government legislation, papers and policy• Third sector documents from eg MIND, Women’s Aid, Joseph Rowntree Foundation• Material published by service user and carer organisations, pressure groups
