1) What is your research question?
*Remember, a research question clearly states both the independent and dependent variables*
2) What is your dependent variable?
*Remember: A dependent variable is the variable that you are trying to predict. It is sometimes called an outcome variable. It is not the variable you manipulate in a study.*
3) What is your independent variable?
*Remember, an independent variable is the variable that you manipulate. This is the variable by which you organize groups. For example, it is your group assignment or the way that you classify your participants. This is the variable you believe will influence the dependent variable.*
4) What is your hypothesis and associated prediction?
*Remember, a hypothesis is a broad statement that explains how your variables are related and your prediction clarifies exactly how you anticipate the independent and dependent variable to relate in your study. A prediction typically includes the words if/then.
5) Annotated Bibliography – Source #1.
In the space below, please write a brief annotation of your FIRST source. Remember this cannot be the article that was included in the research paper topics document. It needs to be a new article that was published within the last 10 years and comes from a peer-reviewed journal. Books, magazines, blogs, and websites do not count.
An annotation is a paragraph (4-8 sentences) and should explain in your own words WHAT was studied, WHAT was done, WHO was included, WHAT was found, HOW this relates to your research study, and WHAT is missing that gives you a clue that your study is a good one and/or is a limitation of their study that your study can resolve.
6) APA Reference Citation – Source #1
Please provide the APA formatted citation for the first source in your annotated bibliography.
7) Annotated Bibliography – Source #2.
In the space below, please write a brief annotation of your SECOND source. 4-8 sentences
8) APA Reference Citation – Source #2
Please provide the APA formatted citation for the second source in your annotated bibliography.
9) Based on your research question and hypothesis, what type of design would be the most appropriate for your specific study? pick an option below.
Experimental design – I will use a confederate in my study or I will manipulate a variable and randomly assign participants to different treatment or intervention groups.
Correlational design – I am interested in looking at quasi-experimental variables. Ultimately, my question relates to how two continuously scaled variables are related to each other. I will end up measuring my variables using mostly surveys and will obtain continuous data that I can use to correlation. Hint: This is not a good option if one of your variables is a categorical variable.
Groups design – I am interested in more quasi-experimental grouping variables. These are variables that will require groups assignment, but people won’t be able to be randomly assigned to groups (i.e., age, gender, etc.)
10) Drawing from your experience in PSY 230, Introduction to Statistics, which ONE of the following statistical analyses would be the MOST appropriate for you to conduct when analyzing data for your study? Note: This response is contingent upon how you answered the previous question in terms of the type of design/method you plan to use. pick option below.
independent samples t-test
repeated measures t-test
ANOVA
repeated measures ANOVA
correlational analysis
11) In 2-3 sentences, give me a brief synopsis of your plan to clarify and justify your responses to the above questions. You may wish to clarify how you’ll measure your independent and dependent variable, a summary of the type of manipulation you’ll impose, etc.
