PAUL’S POST:
The area of interest for my project is the relationship of mandated nurse to patient ratios and their effect on nursing turnover and decreased costs to healthcare. After doing some research of the evidenced based practice literature I have found that this project can be done using quantitative research.
A quantitative, correlational research study has found that there is a relationship between safe staffing, nurses job satisfaction and nursing turnover in acute care hospitals.
Non-probability sampling can be done consecutively by asking registered nurses to fill out a survey and enlisting candidates as their results come in. The inclusion criteria for the sampling is registered nurses with at least 6 months experience working in an acute care facility. Demographic data can also be included – gender, age, highest degree earned, specialty, and years of nursing experience.
The Nursing Work Index(NWI) is a survey used to assess the clinical environment. Specifically, the NWI-COP Control over Practice electronic survey can be used to question attributes contributing to nurse job satisfaction
. A correlational analysis of each question can be used to determine the relationship between job satisfaction and nurse staffing and nurse retention (Hairr et al., 2014).
